Happy New Year, my friends. It sounds so cliche, but 2017 went by so quickly. We arrived at the end of the year, and I was completely unsure how we arrived there at such a rapid pace. But, 2017 was wonderful, containing both extraordinary highs, and some challenging lows. As the new year has begun, I am sure you have seen #oneword2018 posts floating around social media. I enjoy reading what word others have chosen, and even more so when they explain why. It is fascinating and encouraging to see where God is leading each person, and to hear what is stirring within them. The new year, it is here with fresh hope, fresh possibilities, and opportunities yet unknown. It is a good time, my friends. With the new year upon us, have you chosen a word for the year?
My One Word
As I began seeing others post their word for the year, I sat and struggled to find mine. At one point, I thought I had mine, then saw it was the word my sister had chosen. I was back at square one. Many words and ideas floated through my head, but none hit the mark. A friend sent me a list of six words, and I declined all of them. For a while, I wondered if this would be a year for me to not have a word, to just run into the new year and tackle whatever each day brings. Then, I turned to a trusted friend, and her intuitive nature, for help. Her response excited me. Yes! We are getting there, that word (unify) actually stirs something in me! Thanks to my friend, Isabel, I discovered my one word for 2018: unity.
What Does Unity Mean?
According to our buddy, Merriam Webster, unity means:
* the quality or state of not being multiple* a condition of harmony* continuity without deviation or change (as in purpose or action)* the quality or state of being made one* a totality of related parts : an entity that is a complex or systematic whole
I sat, pondering this word, and the blank pages ahead, filled with excitement. Yes, I am looking forward to seeing how “unity” comes to life in the next 365 days. There may be times I will need you to remind me of this word, of its reason. Yes, I am sure there will be days I have to return to this place and be reminded. Do you have a word for the year? I would enjoy reading what yours is, and why it is. For the next 365 days, I want to encourage you in it too. For me, for you, the best is yet to come. Welcome, 2018, I am happy to see you.
